This year we have made some changes to times tables across the school. We have listened to parent, staff and pupil feedback and believe the changes made will have a positive impact. Times tables will be delivered during a ‘discrete slot’ between 8:55-9:30am. For Y3, Y4 and Y5 this will be on a Thursday morning and for Y6, a Friday morning. The structure is as follows:
· Children self/buddy mark their times table homework from the previous week (5 minutes)
· Children are given a quick times tables test, led by the class teacher (5 minutes)
· The remainder of the session will be used to develop knowledge, fluency and understanding with times tables, with class teachers leading this (20 minutes)
During this final section, children will be split into groupings to work on various times table activities. These may include: a teaching slot with the teacher or teaching assistant, Mathletics activities on the laptop, selection of board games, cards, dominoes etc to play. The idea being, this hands on approach, will be a fun way to develop times tables fluency. Feedback from the parent forum in the summer term, included parents recognising they still wanted to be involved in some way and we hope that this new set up will encourage parental support - but in a more engaging fashion. I appreciate that for some parents a Thursday or Friday may be unsuitable for volunteering -I’m sorry about that -but this is what works best for the smooth running of a jam-packed timetable. If you’re willing and able to volunteer please let your child’s teacher know and ensure we have a DBS for you.
